Hard Candy director David Slade makes the leap from indies with resolute contours to big-budget genre films with the film adaptation of the Steve Niles-Ben Templesmith 30 Days of Night. The simple but brilliant premise of the comics and film is that once a year, the sun sets in the secluded town of Barrow, Alaska (yes, it's a real place) and stays the night for 30 next days. What if the city was besieged by vampires who see 30 days of the night as nothing less than paradise?

Sheriff Eben Oleson (Josh Hartnett) faces a series of bizarre crimes as the last hours of the day fall. All cell phones in the city were stolen and destroyed, all watchdogs were killed and the city's infrastructure was targeted. The arrival of a crazy alien (Ben Foster) is a harbinger of even more pressing things to come. In the midst of all these strange events, Eben must also face his ex-wife Stella (Melissa George), who finds herself missing the last robbery of Barrow and is now stuck at home for next month.

Long story short: Barrow is attacked by a horde of vampires led by Marlow (Danny Huston) who, unlike their more tortured and poetic cinematic counterparts, deeply enjoy being vampires and tearing city-dwellers in a frenzy of bloodlust . Only a handful of city dwellers survive, including Eben and Stella who have to put aside their differences to keep their party alive. Needless to say, not all survivors will do so before the end of the 30 days, leading to a confrontation with Marlow and his gang in the snowy streets of Barrow.

Unlike so many other vampire movies, 30 Days of Night is - gasp! - scary actually. Although there are some peppered stock shocks everywhere, these are outnumbered by even more heartbreaking sequences. There are several graphic moments of brutal violence - you'll see things done to the human head that you do not see often in a mainstream horror movie - but one of the most loving moments of violence is wisely going off screen and with little fanfare (like swelling music) to accompany him.

The ruthless and relentless vampires of 30 Days of Night are not leeches with a biting spirit as they are portrayed on Buffy, or eternally damn romantic such as Dracula or Lestat. They are the barbarians at the door, a pack of wolves that hunt and kill because it's just their nature to do it. They speak in a strange ancestral dialect (a concocted for the film) and are not affected by gender clichés such as holy water, crosses or garlic. (Only direct sunlight can kill them.) Not since Nosferatu was on the screen of such monstrous and legitimately scary vampires and, for this reason alone, 30 Days of Night is worth a look.

The heart of the story, however, revolves around Eben and Stella. What has happened between them is never fully taken into account, but it is clear that there is still love there. Fortunately, the story never gets bogged down in a melodramatic soap opera and the focus is always on survival at the vampire threat. Neither Hartnett nor George have been well served by most of their movies so far, but 30 days gives them a chance to - forgive the pun - push their teeth into something more than just playing talking heads in a movie horror.

Director Slade has fashioned a horror movie that, despite all its narrative flaws (characters doing something stupid that endangers everyone, some bad lines of dialogue here and there, characters that are not particularly developed ), succeeds in making the vampires still frightening and terrifying the public.

WHAT PARENTS MUST KNOW
Parents need to know that this vampire horror movie (which was based on a graphic novel) is not for kids. Although the themes are not particularly sophisticated, the imagery is very bloody, with bodies torn, beaten, chewed and maltreated graphically. The children are in danger and killed (one of them is a bloody vampire who is finally killed by a teenager), and there are explosions, car accidents, shootings, foot chases and a lot of tense scenes. The language includes several uses of "f - k" and other blasphemies, there is alcohol, and a grandmother cultivates medicinal marijuana.
